Patrick Halloran (Senior) was born in County Clare, Ireland, in 1827.

At the age of about 26 years he left Plymouth, together with his wife Bridget and one child, for Australian on 29 December 1853. After a voyage lasting 74 days they landed at Perth.

He was under the impression that Australia was like the United Kingdom and that a day’s journey would bring them from one town to another. However Patrick made the best of this disappointment and remained in Perth, which was then a convict settlement, for three years.

From Perth they proceeded to Adelaide, the voyage lasting five weeks. After a short stay in Adelaide he left his wife and child there and took passage in the "Nonpareil" for Melbourne.

Unfortunately the vessel was wrecked during the trip and he was reported drowned, but as it turned out he was rescued after spending a night in the rigging.

Question: Is this the ship? - (Nonpareil. Barque, 399 tons. Built in 1865. Lbd 125.7 x 29.8 x 17.5 ft. In late 1880, collided with the barque Hereford when the Nonpareil requested assistance of a doctor to attend her captain. The Nonpareil came in too close, the collision causing her main yard to be carried away. The hereford was only slightly damaged, but went aground near Cape Otway as she neared the end of her voyage. In 1863 after six years were spent in Victoria Mr and Mrs Patrick Halloran and family came to Tumut and settled at Tumut Plains.

Then in 1866 some three years afterwards he took up a selection near the mouth of the Blowering Valley on the eastern side of the river and resided there until his death in 1900.

1880 - THE following particulars are given in the Gundagai Times of the death of young Stephen Halloran, biíplly telegraphed on Tuesday :-" A very melancholy event happened at Lacmalac, Tumut, on Saturday afternoon. A young lad named Stephen Halloran was shot dead bv a companion named William Robert Trossider.

The two youths were often together, and on Saturday afternoon one of the minors heard them shouting and amusing themselves in the house at the claim. John Johnson, one of tho tributers, was coming from his work when he heard the report of a gun, and immediately after he met young Trossider deadly pale and trembling like a leaf.

In a few minutes he made Mr Johnson understand that he picked up his gun, and beleaving it was not loaded he in a moment of thoughtlessness held the muzzle quite close to Halloran's head and pulled the trigger. The boy fell dead.

The grief of deceased's mother, who was soon on the spot, can be better imagined than described.

The father was away at Blowering at the time. Johnson rode into town and reported the matter to the Police magistrate, and Sergeant Zoellner accompanied him back to Lacmalac.

An inquest was held on Monday, when the evidence went to show that the shooting was accidental. - (Ref- The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Friday 22 October 1880).
